Samantha Schmitt

Oregon's Samantha Schmitt makes a move to the hoop during the Panthers’ nonconference loss to Waukesha West on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at DeForest High School.

Samantha Schmitt looks to lead a talented junior class that could help the Oregon girls basketball team push for Badger West Conference contention and playoff success.

“Looking to build on last year and compete for a conference and regional championship,” Oregon head coach Adam Wamsley said. “If we can do a better job of finishing around the rim, protecting the basketball, rebounding, we have the ability to go as far as we want.”

Schmitt returns for her junior season after being named a first-team selection in the Badger West Conference last year. Schmitt led Oregon in scoring with 11.8 points per game. She also led the Panthers in assists (3.3), steals (3.6) and total 3s made (48). Schmitt helped Oregon to a 14-12 record and to a Division 2 regional final.

“Expect Sam to take another jump in all areas including leadership,” Wamsley said.

The Panthers bring back nine returning letterwinners, including five juniors to join Schmitt: guards Katelyn Studebaker, Brooke Bastian and Reese Evans, along with forwards McKenna Carroll and Delaney Nyenhuis.

“Without any seniors expected on the roster, I expect all our juniors to lead us as a group,” Wamsley said. “They are excited for the season and want to build on last season, they now know what it takes to be successful at the varsity level.”

Wamsley noted Studebaker as a lockdown defender and Bastian as a scoring threat from the outside with the speed to take defenders off the dribble. Wamsley said he expects Evans to have a chance to have a bigger role off the bench for the Panthers this season.

Wamsley touted Carroll and Nyenhuis as two of the team’s top defenders.

Other returning letterwinners include sophomore wing Olivia Neis, along with sophomore guards Klara Tracy and Carly Zych.

Freshman guard Teagan Schoenecker and sophomore forward Addison Sabel could be key additions to the varsity team this season as well.

“Talented group with good depth, lots of athleticism, quickness and basketball intangibles,” Wamsley said. “I’m excited about what we will be able to do defensively, mixing up our pressures with our quickness gives us the opportunity to force a lot of turnovers and tough possessions.”

Oregon tied for third in the Badger West Conference last season with a 9-6 record. The Panthers bowed out in a Division 2 regional semifinal game against DeForest. Oregon will play in the Division 1 tournament this season.
