In a showdown to remain in the hunt for a Badger West Conference championship, the Oregon baseball team lost two games to Madison Edgewood last week.
Oregon (7-4, 5-4 Badger West) couldn’t hang on to a six-run lead and lost to Edgewood 16-7 on Friday, April 29, at Warner Park in Madison. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Crusaders beat Oregon 9-3 on Tuesday, April 26, in Oregon.
The Panthers bounced back with a 7-3 victory over Madison West on Monday, May 2, at Oregon High School.
Oregon 7, Madison West 3
The Panthers racked up eight stolen bases and ran its way to a win over the Regents on May 2, in Oregon.
Senior Tyler Soule went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior teammate Ryne Panzer finished 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Cameron Mueller also had two steals.
The Panthers broke the game open with a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Oregon’s Ashton Ritter knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice in the fifth. The Panthers scored another run on an error by the Regents. Soule walked to score another run.
Ritter earned the win in five innings on the mound. He gave up two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking three. Brock Buskager tossed two shutout innings in relief.
Madison Edgewood 16, Oregon 7
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead after a six-run second. Panzer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Crusaders answered with two runs in the third and a nine-run fourth to take an 11-7 lead. Edgewood’s Jacob Sheahan came through with a two-run single. Jackson Trudgeon had an RBI single, Chase Koch had a two-run double and Leo Koenig had an RBI single in the big fourth.
Oregon’s James Heller tossed 3 ⅓ innings and gave up seven earned runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking six. A trio of pitchers for the Panthers combined walked 13.
The Crusaders pounded out 11 hits. Trudgeon went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Edgewood 9, Oregon 3
Heller went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, but the Panthers couldn’t pull off a comeback in a conference loss to the Crusaders on April 26, in Oregon.
Seniors Panzer and Andy Niaves each went 2-for-4.
Jack Walter pitched five innings and gave up two earned runs on eight hits and struck out two. Carter Goltz tossed two innings in relief and gave up four earned runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking two.
The Crusaders sealed the win with a four-run seventh. The Panthers were plagued by four errors.
The Crusaders scored one run in the second on an error. Oregon’s Linus Maurice delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1. Edgewood had a four-run third to take the lead for good.
Edgewood’s Steffen Mello, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, had an RBI single in the third. Sheahan also had a clutch two-run single.
